Jomon Lithics

Chipped stone axes from sites in Niigata Prefecture.  While called axes, in reality these tools were used to dig roots and tubers from the ground.

Ground stone axes found in Niigata Prefecture.  These tools were used in woodworking and were used as axes.

The Jomon made and used a variety of types of arrowheads. Like in other parts of the world, their shape and design can be used as a chronological marker.  These are a variety of chert arrowheads found from sites in Niigata Prefecture.

The Jomon also made earrings of both stone and clay. It is unknown whether both men and women used them, or if just one of the sexes used them.
